A practical guide to your Ragdoll kitten’s first days, from the family who raised them.
A little preparation makes the first day calm for everyone. Have these ready at home:
Begin with one calm room and let your kitten explore it fully before opening up the rest of the home. The scented blanket in your kitten pack carries the smell of mum and littermates and helps them feel safe.
Some kittens explore within minutes, others prefer to watch from a hiding spot for a day or two. Both are completely normal. Let them come to you and keep early handling gentle and short.
Feed at regular times, keep the litter tray in the same place, and keep the first week low key. Routine is what turns a new house into home.
Feeding: keep to the food from your kitten pack at first. If you later change foods, do it gradually over a week or so, and always keep fresh water down. Your care guide covers portions and mealtimes.
Grooming: your kitten has been brushed and handled from birth, so keep that going with short, positive sessions two or three times a week, and check nails regularly.
Safety: we recommend indoor living or secure outdoor spaces such as a catio. Watch open windows and balconies, tuck cables away, keep washing machine doors shut, and avoid toxic plants. Lilies in particular are highly dangerous to cats.
Register with a local vet in your kitten’s first week and take along the health records from your kitten pack. Your vet will advise on ongoing preventative care, and it’s worth considering insurance from day one.
Keep introductions calm, short and supervised, and always give your kitten an escape route. For resident pets, swap scents before face-to-face meetings. Ragdolls are patient souls, but every friendship takes a little time.
